NEW YORK (CNN) -- Pfizer Inc. said on Monday it will spend $1.5 billion on advertising for its arthritis drugs Celebrex and Vioxx, both of which treat arthritis pain.
"This is a significant milestone that would have been achieved even without the drug alone, in part because the FDA has long approved the two medicines for the treatment of pain and other conditions," Pfizer spokeswoman Jen Psipp said. "This is an important milestone in our effort to help patients who have not yet had treatment for arthritis."
Celebrex, or celecoxib, was originally approved for the treatment of arthritis by the FDA in 1992, and Vioxx in 1996. Celecoxib, the only drug approved for arthritis, is also on the market. Pfizer will spend $1.5 billion to promote the drugs, with the U. S. Food and Drug Administration spending nearly $1 billion to promote the two.
The U. Food and Drug Administration has not approved Celebrex or Vioxx in more than a dozen countries. The agency has said it was "appropriate" to evaluate the drug's safety and effectiveness in more than 20 other countries. Pfizer, which is still in talks with the agency about its future plans for the arthritis drug, said Monday it had decided to continue the marketing of Vioxx, citing safety concerns.
Pfizer said it had received approval from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for the treatment of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis in 2006. The FDA has said it was reviewing the drugs for safety and efficacy.
In December, Pfizer said it had received approval from the European Medicines Agency for the treatment of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Vioxx was approved for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis in July of this year. The drug, which also treats rheumatoid arthritis, is used to treat the pain of osteoarthritis, an inflammation of the muscles in the joints of the feet and other muscles.
A spokesman for Pfizer said the company is evaluating the data and that the company would continue to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the arthritis drugs in more than 20 other countries.
Pfizer also announced Monday that it had received approval from the U. Food and Drug Administration for Vioxx and Celebrex in more than 20 countries.
Pfizer said it has received approval from the FDA for Vioxx from the FDA, including in New York, Boston and Philadelphia. Vioxx, the most common drug for rheumatoid arthritis, is approved for the treatment of arthritis in the upper right knee.Vioxx is also approved for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, which affects millions of people in the U. and in Europe, as well as osteoarthritis, a condition in which the muscles in the joints of the joints become inflamed. Vioxx is used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis in adults. The Food and Drug Administration approved Vioxx in December, with a warning that the drug could lead to serious cardiovascular problems.Vioxx was approved for the treatment of arthritis in adults in Europe. Pfizer said it would continue to market Vioxx for treatment of arthritis.
Vioxx was approved for the treatment of arthritis in adults in the United States, and Pfizer said it would continue to market Vioxx for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. The drug is currently marketed in the U. as Vioxx-Pfizer Laboratories, Inc. "We continue to work with other physicians and patients to find other treatments for arthritis that are more effective," Pfizer said in a statement. Vioxx is used to treat the pain of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis in adults. The drugs also are being marketed as a pain reliever, arthritis drug, and pain-reliever.
"We want to make sure that they are not made by anybody except the doctors," said John J. Campbell, a spokesman for Pfizer.
The drug's label states it is not approved for the treatment of arthritis, but the FDA has said it has not yet approved Vioxx or Celebrex in more than a dozen countries.
